Over the past decade, the explosion of streaming television and an astronomical increase in queer visibility have made it hard to find a TV show without queer characters, creators, or themes. Every month is a great month to watch LGBTQ movies and read LGBTQ books. For this year’s Pride Month, we compiled a list of the most important LGBTQ shows created for television.

The second 90 Day Fiance spinoff includes Before the 90 Days, a reality dating drama in which couples make romantic relationships online before meeting in person. The mid-season cancellation of Playing It Straight had an impact on other LGBT-related programming. Seriously, Dude, I’m Gay, another Fox produced LGBT-related reality television special, was set to air on June 7, 2004, although it was abruptly removed from the Fox schedule only eleven days before its airdate. The underperformance and cancellations of these series resulted in executive producers Douglas Ross and Tommy Campbell consulting GLAAD for review of He’s a Lady. Colton Underwood’s season of The Bachelor is in full swing and he’s well on his way toward that fateful meeting with Neil Lane.

This time the location was set in Spain and the new series was hosted by T4 presenter, Jameela Jamil and comedian Alan Carr provided the narration. The series was also aired on Channel 4’s teen-strand, T4 on Saturdays. Filmed in Elko, Nevada at the Sizzling Saddle Ranch, the series followed Jackie, a college student from Wisconsin, as she selected a suitor among a group of fourteen men. The admirer was a homosexual friend of a heterosexual man who was so outraged after the taping that he later murdered the admirer. Other shows focused on the conventional blind date, where two people were set up and then captured on video, sometimes with comments or subtitles that made fun of their dating behaviour. He Said, She Said focused not on setting up the date, but on comparing the couple’s different impressions afterwards, and for their cooperation offering to fund a second date. These resembled the reality shows that began to emerge at about the same time in the 1990s. Dating game shows are game shows that incorporates a variety of matchmaking systems and services in the form of a game with clear rules.
Exploring polyamorous relationship structures with a light touch, the indie production features moving performances and very gay lighting in its apartment party scenes. One of Netflix’s biggest queer TV shows of the year, Heartstopper follows the unlikely friendship and eventual romance between gay and out nerd Charlie and rugby star Nick. Based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novels of the same name, the show has already been renewed for two more seasons. Look out for all the rainbows in the lighting and Oseman’s animations flitting across the screen.
Human matchmaking is involved only in selecting the game’s contestants, who are usually selected more for the amusement value than any concern for their happiness or compatibility. Hosted by self-proclaimed pick-up artist called Mystery , the show follows eight unlucky bachelors who are taught how to successfully approach women. Along with his wingmen J-Dog and James Matador, Mystery puts the contestants through a series of dating challenges meant to sharpen their game.
Bowden also faced criticism from viewers after he came out in opposition to abortion during a discussion with his then-fiancée, who advocated that only women should be able to choose what happens to their bodies. While the show was a hit with the LGBTQ+ community for a long time, it gained mainstream success on a widespread level when it moved to VH1. The show follows the Fab Five, who are all LGBTQ+ people, as they help nominated contestants find happiness and joy in their own lives. Project Runway has showcased the skills of many different designers over the years, and it’s never shied away from including LGBTQ+ contestants. Even the original host himself, Tim Gunn, is a member of the community. And, while it doesn’t focus on LGBTQ+ issues, there are many people on the series who are in LGBTQ+ relationships.
Rather than reveling in the salacious, the show offers an empathetic look into the lives of people who’ve been marginalized by society. Once the American half of the couple travels to their partner’s native land abroad, the two must decide if they’re a match made in heaven. If so, they can pursue their K-1 visa for legal marriage over the required 90 days.
When a new season or show comes around, we turn our eyes to the next cast and seemingly move on from the person we last rooted against in these shows. It’s a cycle that isn’t go away anytime soon, so we can only embrace the villain and call these individuals when it goes from usual confrontation to far-too-personal of an attack. What both of these women did not only threw their game away, but it also negatively affected others in the house.
The ensuing upending of lives results in an exploration of queer family structures in one of the funniest LGBTQ shows on Netflix. This adaptation of the famed Sally Rooney novel follows Frances and Bobbi’s sudden friendship and eventual affair with a straight married couple. The translation from book to silver screen gives the show space to delve into the queer dimensions of the complicated relationships. Based on the true story of Spanish trans television personality Cristina Ortiz Rodríguez, this multigenerational limited queer show follows as La Veneno meets a young trans woman who wants to write a biography of her in the 2010s.
Is a dating show from Spain that follows three successful social media influencers attempting to find love. Though this isn’t as popular of a show as others due to language barriers, the series does include a lot of LGBTQ+ representation over the course of six episodes. Overall, ABC’s The Bachelor has been overwhelmingly straight when it comes to its choices for leads and contestants.
